The firm has battled changing government priorities, including the death knoll of the Australian shipping industry with the removal of national protection. It has witnessed striking wharfies, the regulation of labour and work practises and the much-needed introduction of the safer workplace. Through all these changes, Halliday engineering has reinvented itself, refined its approach to business and adapted where others fell by the wayside. The Myer family and The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra have been inextricably linked since the 1920s, when Sidney Myer led the Orchestra, as Chairman. Today, Edgar Myer, Sidney’s great grandson is the Chairman of the MSO. This booklet summarizes the history of the relationship between the Myer family and the MSO and it is also a program for the first concert perfumed by the orchestra at the Myer family home, Cranlana.

Myer is a household name Australia wide and much has been written about Sidney Myer’s retail empire. Yet little accurate information has been published about his philanthropic legacy and early influences, this book addressed this deficit. Sidney migrated to Australia in 1899, largely to escape the persecution he faced as a Russian Jew. He was already an astute retailer having learnt his trade in his mother’s store in Krichev, Mogilev. He gained further experience as a pedlar in country Victoria before launching a business which was to grow to become the largest retail empire in Australia.

Yet he also had a life beyond Australia. For over a decade he resided in America and at one time seriously considered re-establishing his business there. In America he began a successful share portfolio which would make him a millionaire. Yet his American dream turned sour and he returned to Australia to invest his energies in his Myer Emporium and as enthusiastically in the community. The Myer Music Bowl is perhaps the most visible legacy of his philanthropy, but there were many more beneficiaries of his generous support.

This book, based on years of meticulous archival research, tells the story of Myer’s life and legacy through an examination of archival sources, many of which have never before been published. It attempts to depict in some depth the life of Sidney Myer in three vastly different countries at different periods of his life. Sidney Myer died suddenly at the age of 56, his life's work unfinished. Yet his legacy remains, and this book is a small tribute to his life and achievements in Russia, America and Australia.

The Burwood Cricket Club had been in existence at least as long as the city of Burwood (Vic) itself. The Club can trace its history to at least 1873.

The first white settlement in the region now known as Burwood was in 1858 when the region was called Ballyshanassy, after the then Premier of Victoria, John O’Shanassy. The location was briefly known as Norwood (possibly from 1874) and then gazetted as Burwood in 1879. The Norwood Cricket Club had existed from the 1870s and this became the Burwood Cricket Club in 1879 when the name of the local government area was changed. Hence the Burwood Cricket Club has been an integral part of Burwood since its establishment. There is no doubt that the Burwood Cricket Club (BCC) is one of the oldest (and possibly the oldest) sporting clubs in Burwood. Community at the Crease offers a contextual history of the growth and popularity of cricket in Burwood and traces the origins of the Club and its evolution through to the current era as the Club embraces diversity in its juniors, women’s, and all-abilities teams.

The narrative follows the history of the Club from the foundation years, through to the 1890s when the Gilmour Trophy was won by the Club in 1891 in a well-publicised game against rivals Box Hill; to the war years which also documents the war service of many players and the erection of the memorial to the fallen in the home ground, Burwood Reserve; through the depression years; and then to the “Glory Years” which saw success in the Burwood and District Cricket Association; then the transition to Turf cricket in the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association, years which saw a number of First XI premierships in the Senior Turf competition as well as success in various matting competitions; then the difficult years of division within the Club and then redemption as the Club evolved into a well-run inclusive sporting organisation which welcomes all comers. The most recent years of the Club are explored and reveal years which culminated in the election of the first female president and the sponsorship of talented young players from disadvantaged countries.

The book features a foreword by famed cricket writer, Gideon Haigh and is beautifully illustrated by never before published photographs. The narrative includes anecdotal reflections from past players, coaches, life members and others dedicated to the Club over the years.

This booklet was commissioned to celebrate the 100 years since the birth of Ross Shelmerdine; entrepreneur, vigneron, farmer, philanthropist, business and community leader and family man. It reproduces original archival material retained by the family, and documents the Shelmerdine hat making heritage, his war service, his marriage and family, his leadership of the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories and his tireless work for the Heart Foundation, Churchill Memorial Trust and his visionary work creating the famed Mitchelton winery and with the Hereford Stud in Tooborac. Dr Stella Barber conducted the research for this biography that chronicles Merlyn Baillieu Myer’s fascinating life from her birth in 1900 to her death in 1982. Dr Barber worked with journalist Michael Shmith to capture the life of young Merlyn Baillieu, from her upbringing in Queenscliff and her transformation as the wife of department store magnate Sidney Myer. The book details Merlyn’s life of travel, business and philanthropy, which would ultimately see her being awarded the highest honour a woman of her era could receive, that of Dame Commander of the British Empire. Stunning archival photos display her innate elegance and style, while the detailed biography shines a light on her work as a dedicated and generous fundraiser for hospitals, heart, and cancer research, for which she was honoured as Dame Merlyn in 1960. Through the memories of those who knew her and shared her history, her own copious correspondence and meticulous archival research by historian Dr Stella M Barber, Merlyn is revealed as a great Australian.

This history is almost at times a fairy tale, a story of improbable and uncertain events of heroes and heroines, one of valour, assuredness, and faith. It is the story of a vision made true by very real people. When then Principal of Wesley College, David Prest, wrote to David Kings, instigator of the idea to form a grammar school in the Goulburn Valley, in December 1980, he reflected that what Kings and those who shared his vision were trying to do was “something quite noble.” It is likely that Prest did believe their dream would become reality. It is unlikely though that he would have ever considered himself a candidate to lead the school at some future point in that noble history. This history is not solely the story of the principals who lead the school, noble though there were: Vic Ryall, John Bacon, David Prest and Ian Rule. Nor is it simply the story of the Council and its leaders: David Kings, Rod Miller, Frank Dawson, and David Faram.
